Joint Fires Support Systems: achieve tactical success
Digital Aided Close Air Support (DACAS) is now a pivotal part of operations for NATO countries, against the backdrop of an increasingly digital battlefield. The Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Acquisition & Reconnaissance (ISTAR) resources deployed by units on the ground must be integrated in the command chain, while ensuring interoperability between services and with allies. To address this trend, Safran Electronics & Defense is introducing its Joint Fires Support Systems, a family of solutions that combine modular architecture and advanced digital capabilities.
The Joint Fires Support Systems comprise a precision inertial North seeker and electro-optical (optronic) equipment produced by Safran Electronics & Defense, a laser designator (or marker), a radio and a Geographic Information System (SIG) deployed by armed forces. Depending on the mission, various electro-optical equipment can be chosen by the user, including in particular Safran products such as the PLRF rangefinder, and Moskito or JIM binoculars, in various versions. The Joint Fires Support Systems are designed to be integrated with armed forces' C4I systems: Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Intelligence.
More digital for enhanced fire control
The Joint Fires Support Systems from Safran Electronics & Defense are designed for use by forward observers and controllers. They handle the real-time surveillance, identification, positioning and communication of TLE CAT1 (Target Location Error) coordinates for a given point of interest.
The interoperability of the system's different components means that coordinates and tactical information can be transmitted digitally, according to joint allied standards. This arrangement helps limit any risk of error or collateral damage. At the same time these systems save precious time for operational forces, by reducing the "Sensor to Shooter" cycle.
Safran Electronics & Defense's proven expertise
Safran Electronics & Defense has developed proven expertise in optronics and inertial navigation, especially the demanding technology of resonating gyros. The company has sold more than 150,000 of these units, which form the core of high-precision inertial navigation systems. The Joint Fires Support Systems are based on a latest-generation hemispherical resonator gyro (HRG). Safran Electronics & Defense drew on its highly modular products to develop these new systems, which can be easily integrated with other systems deployed by armed forces.
