Sagem to supply navigation systems for Abu Dhabi class frigates, future flagship of the United Arab Emirates Navy

Paris, Le Bourget, Euronaval, October 28, 2010

Sagem (Safran group) has won a contract from Italian shipyard Fincantieri SpA to deliver and integrate the Sigma 40 inertial navigation systems on the new Abu Dhabi class anti-submarine warfare (ASW) frigate.

Integrated in the ship's combat system, the Sigma 40 ring laser gyro inertial navigation system is a critical part of the ship. It significantly enhances the effectiveness of the ship's sensors, weapons and self-defense systems because of its high precision, reliability and sustained performance over time.

Furthermore, the Sigma 40 is known for its easy operation and maintenance, along with a compact design and hardware and software scalability.

This latest contract consolidates Sagem's position as the supplier of high-performance inertial navigation systems for the United Arab Emirates Navy's front-line warships. The Sigma 40 system was also chosen by the UAE for many other vessels.

Sagem navigation systems are now used on many surface vessels and submarines (nuclear, air-independent and conventional propulsion) deployed by more than 30 navies around the world. The Sigma 40 is used on Horizon class frigates and Rubis/Amethyste class nuclear attack submarines. In particular, it was chose for the FREMM multi-mission frigates to be deployed by France and Italy, and for the new Suffren class nuclear attack submarines, as part of the Barracuda program.
